When do Ontario Disability (ODSP) payment actually get paid?

There's another more recent article about this, on this website. But it's pretty much the same shit.

Short version:

Apparently, for December 2015, as with December 2014, it's coming out on the 22nd. But every other month it's the last banking/business/non-holiday/weekday of the month.

Long version:

Since no government website will answer this question, here's the magic formula for divining ODSP payment dates: it's on the last day of the month, unless that falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case it's on the friday before that. Or if that friday's a holiday, then the day before that. Whichever non-holiday, non-weekend day, as in, whichever bank day is the last bank day of the month.

It's not on the last friday of every month. Just the months where the last day is not a "workday."

So that means that this page is wrong.

Welfare, they don't mind saying when the dates are. ODSP, for some reason, it's a secret. And the reason for the secrecy is also a secret!

Note: It's also hard to find out how much money people on ODSP receive. Well, a single person on ODSP, without special accommodations for care or mobility equipment etc, can expect to receive about a thousand bucks. Whoop dee doo dah day.

So, Welfare (OW) = ~ $650/mo, ODSP = ~ $1000/mo, either way, you = poor. So poor.

How poor? Well, the poverty line is about $1800/mo. So, if you're on welfare, you're like, superpoor. You're poor times two. If you're on ODSP, and your disability magically costs you nothing, then you're poor times 1.5. But since your disability does cost you extra money, you're somewhere between superpoor (x2) and uberpoor (x3, as in, two-thirds of the way between the poverty line and zero) ...and of course, if you're on zero benefits, then you are officially destitute, as in, you have zero income, and you also can't prove you're poor, so you have nothing. Those people are really the only people who should need a meal program, and then only for a couple of days, once in a blue moon.

  1. some people still recieve odsp through the mail, in wich case, as i do, will recieve a 2 day post dated cheque, you could take your cheque to a grocery store and spend 10% of it to have them cash it early, 2 people on ODSP recieve approximately 1400 for the both of them, it looks like lots on paper, but, in one hand, out the other, half gone after cashing it on bills, groceries, cable, internet, phone etc. BUT don't forget about our 1% BIG TIME CHEQUE RAISE, please, our cheque went up 12 whole dollars. still have to visit the fricken foodbank every month too, the poor stay poor, the rich get richer.

    1. Yes it's less. When you live with a partner, you have less monetary bills to pay. Rent is cheaper as you aren't paying rent for two residences, your utilities are cheaper. You get more money for living expenses such as food when you have two people on your cheque.

MEAL PROGRAM, NOT ODSP WELFARE RANT PAGE.

    6. well really, the scope of the site includes anything that the articles discuss... so the comments mostly take their cues from the articles... so although a lot of these comments are about life on ODSP, they're being left here because they're relevant to the topic of the page, even if it's loosely, and even if it includes arguments

    8. now that is a pile of bullshit (november 21st, 2015) They are not allowed to refuse help to people based on not having a bank account. There are a great many people that are homeless and receive benefits such as street allowances, and a great many of these people simply do not have identification to get a bank account, so give your head a little shake back to reality and stop trying to scare people you ass!

    11. What I don't understand is that if you are on these government Assistance programs, it is so you can have a roof over your head and food on your table as well as the medications you need. Last time I checked Phone, cable and internet were not a necessity you need to live a healthy life so maybe cut out those things and live with in your means and there wont be a problem. If some one goes to work everyday and pays out of their pay check rent, food and meds and cant afford cable then they don't have it until they can afford it. read books volunteer with your time or especially those OW get a job. Places like McDonalds and Tim Hortons are always hiring even people with Disabilities.

    14. 2016 ODSP Payment Dates
      Did you know?

Direct bank deposit is the easiest way for you to receive your ODSP payments.

Instead of receiving a cheque, the money you are eligible to receive would be deposited directly into your bank account each month.

To receive your payment securely and quickly, speak to your caseworker about enrolling in direct bank deposit.

ODSP issues income support payments monthly.

Payments are made available to you on the last business day of each month (December payments may be made available earlier in the month).

For example, January 2016 payments are made available on January 29, 2016.
      Benefit Month Payment Date
      January January 29, 2016
      February February 29, 2016
      March March 31, 2016
      April April 29, 2016
      May May 31, 2016
      June June 30, 2016
      July July 29, 2016
      August August 31, 2016
      September September 30, 2016
      October October 31, 2016
      November November 30, 2016
December December payment dates may vary. Please check with your local ODSP office toward the beginning of the month.

    18. Dear Anonymous - Now, your comment about how ODSP and OW clients should not be allowed to have the internet or cellphone - that really pisses me off. Do you have any idea how many government services - municipal, provincial and federal - that expect callers to check their website for the information we are asking about?? How can we possibly look up anything on the internet when we are 'not permitted to have such a luxury item' just because it pisses you (the taxpayer) off?? The second reason why my family have the internet is for family connections. I talk to my family on Skype, one a week, because they live overseas. what is even better is that these calls are free, over and above the basic monthly internet costs, and that saves us hundreds of dollars in phone toll calls!! We dont have cell phones because they just cost too much!! But the internet we must have!! Please use a little common sense when making demands like this. Thank you.

    4. Yes but not through Money Mart.

      Cash Money will do it.

So will Mogo...(www.mogo.ca)...I like Mogo personally. You can do stuff online or in store but not both at once. They will also issue you longer term loans where you pay interest (plus a tiny bit of the principal) monthly.

Mogo will either give it to you as direct deposit or onto one of their entirely free Visa cards. If they give it to you on the Visa card, they typically even add $3.00 to cover bank machine fees. The card is otherwise totally free and usable as a standard Visa card in store or online.

Redleaf loans www.redleafloans.ca will also do it online BUT only for 15 days. They will still charge you the maximum allowed ($21.00) even though it's only for half of the typical time.

All places will want you to fully repay a loan before re-loaning.

Hope this helps. For the record, I do not work for or in any way represent any of the companies listed above. I am just a customer.

Also, this info is for ODSP. If your on OW, then the info may not apply.

As always, borrow responsibly. Payday loans can lead to an evil "credit cycle" where you get trapped into paying back and reloaning. Avoid them if possible.

      Delete
    5. Do not take a payday loan and get caught in that cycle it will ruin you. Borrow from family or a friend or a neighbor BUT DO NOT GO TO ANY PAYDAY LOAN COMPANY. They prey on the poor and weak.

      Delete
    6. Today is the 19th of December. Why go to a Pay Day loan. Just wait till Midnight when the ODSP funds are deposited and withdraw what you need.

      Delete
    7. yeah, or if you do go with cash money, just do it for the one month... I've been stuck on this thing for months now and it's like $60/month to keep borrowing the same $300... so I've already spent more than $300 ...do not do it without having a plan to go with THAT MUCH LESS MONEY next month... do not

      Delete
    8. the cheque comes early in december FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY, just as it ALWAYS has, please get a clue, it will arrive on the 20th of december, but that has to last you for the rest of december and january, so, don't spend it all at the bar or on weed ok? feed your kids or your self and pay your bills, i can't tell you how many people in my city don't even belong on ODSP or welfare, all it is is drug and booze money to a lot of them, lazy asses.

    9. Yes money mart will loan on odsp and ctc.

      Delete
    10. Money mart on willow Rd and dawson rd in the buffet roll plaza, pizza pizza in Guelph does loan on odsp. They also gave me the first $200 with no fees. That helped me alot for the month and knowing I would only pay back the $200.

      Delete
    11. yeah, that's 'cause it's your first time... I just ran out of rent money so I had to borrow the max that I could, which is $375, so at the end of this month I'll have $450 to pay back, so I'll have $150 left over after my rent's paid... so of course I'll take out another loan, but smaller, stepping it down, and so on each month, so each of those months I'll have about a hundred dollars less out of my budget than I usually do, IF I take six months to do it... which will cost me about $300 in total interest... I hate when I have to do this

      Delete
  6. ODSP has used the same December payment date as CPP for years. This year that date is December 19th.

As far as payments issued on a Monday, some banks (like BMO and TD) use a system that when they close on Friday, any transactions after that time are dated for the next banking day so after midnight Friday (when ODSP pushes the direct deposit button so that payments are available first thing Monday), those banks still using the old next banking day system will release the funds as of 12:01 AM Saturday, because their system considers that to be Monday.

If you want to be sure, just call ODSP, tell them you are an ODSP client, and ask them when the December payment will be issued. I've done this a few times and they don't ask you to identify yourself they just tell you the date of payment in December.

      Delete
    2. technically, it turns out it was an overpayment that's being clawed back from everybody at fifty bucks a month... because of their crappy computer system... and yeah, we'd definitely call it a bonus... having food money, during the holidays... imagine that... sorry to not be suffering quite as much as usual, asshole

      booze $40
      smokes $30
      weed $150
      food $250
      cellphone $40

and of course, the weed only costs money because the government's decided it'd be criminal of me to let it grow on trees as it naturally does

    4. and of course, that $40 worth of booze would cost me about $10 in most countries

    8. look, my whole problem is that there is no higher education that I ever had access to, and no matter what, there is no job that I can get that doesn't involve me mortgaging my health... and I realize, that's the scheme... poor people can only get by if we sell out our health... so yeah, I can totally work, if I don't have to have fumes shoved in my face, I don't know why I can't manage full-time but I've never been able to do it without burning out, but then again I've never had a job that's not a burnout factory, so yeah, after having zero opportunities and realizing that I'm just another generation of ready-made oppressed underclass, I feel pretty fucking entitled... I'm like, fine, you wanna make it impossible to live off the land? you wanna make it impossible to have a job that I can keep? you want me not to pay my bills by becoming a professional criminal? fucking pay me off. I'm not the one who created a school system that protects child abusers, I'm not the one who decided not to enforce health standards in the workplace... all those people have never, ever been poor, and neither have 90% of their parents

      Delete
    9. and yeah, actually, I did spend fourty bucks on booze... not everyone's an alcoholic... I'm also not the one who decided that booze and cigarettes need to be ridiculously, artificially expensive in this country... the ones who did decide that, are the same people who decided I need to be living a thousand dollars a month below the poverty line, and that somehow our ODSP benefit should be the same amount

Like with weed: if we put the laws back to the way they were a few years ago, I could legally grow my own for free. Same thing with the boozers out there. Complain if you want, the government sets the price, they get the extra. The public can change those two things at any time.

    1. Get your facts straight. A Postal Worker MUST sort and deliver all the mail they receive at their sorting station on that day.

      NO EXCEPTIONS .

Even ad mail must be delivered.

Not doing so results in discipline or termination.

I don't work for the Post Office but if I did I would enjoy shoving a cheque now and then down the sewer just to get some of you rattled enough that you'd have to get up off your ass and take the bus to the ODSP office to pick up your replacement "Pay Cheque".

Not bright, and certainly not gracious(other than in your own delusional mind)just sad, angry and lonely are the characteristics that come to mind after reading your posts. Nobody who has an inch of humility or real self esteem talks the way you do. It's all overcompensation to cover up how badly you feel about yourself. A walking defense mechanism. Nobody's commenting 'sing it sister", "you said exactly what I was thinking" just head shaking and pity.

    8. Anonymity is nice, if it helps in writing better stuff, why not use it? Check out how pissed off Jonathan is... totally missed the point of me bragging about how much traffic the site got (when it was being maintained) ...dude, I was bragging about how much demand there was for this information and how ridiculous it was that it was so hard to find, and how easy it was for one person to fill that hole. It never took any of my brightness to figure that out. Didn't take a lot of brightness to make the site or do the work. It took conviction, though, to assume that the info was needed, and that those who needed it would be looking for it on the internet, so I was proud to be vindicated by the traffic to the site. I'm trying to convince other people and agencies to take on this work because I think people need convincing that it'd be useful. The people at TDIN and those who make policy decisions for them don't think that actual meal program clients are going to use the internet to find this information, and they also think that it'd be way too complicated to deliver it properly, so I did this site partially to prove both of those points wrong. Too bad I never found someone to hand it off to when I stopped working on it! Definitely a lot of loneliness and frustration in my life, and yeah I'd expect it to come through in the articles - I meant for it to come through! Although the feeling badly about myself, this is an accusation that I regularly get when people do not want to hear about some problem. If someone doesn't want to talk about something or hear about something, they'll just say "don't be so hard on yourself" which never makes sense, but it doesn't have to, as long as it rebrands me being frustrated with a problem into me hating myself, it's an easier thing for them to work with. Which sucks because that's how a lot of problems get reinforced, I think.

I had no idea at the time how little people got. I had no idea at the time how low the benefits fraud rates were. And then every time I'd be talking with my friends about my job I'd underscore how lucky I was, to have found that job. And how otherwise I'd still be working minimum wage. Now I do crazy stuff that takes two hours in order to save five bucks. Yeah, go ahead and call me lazy. Karma police will get you too.

  20. Oh god... thank goodness that's over with. January is the worst... worst worst worst month. Who went homeless because of that late payment, Christmas, their own lack of discipline, unexpected bullshit, etc? How many people went homeless? How many people committed suicide? It should be like... you get your regular payment, and you also get another payment, maybe just a couple hundred bucks, like a week before Christmas. Or like... a gift card of your choice. Or something. I mean, I know we don't deserve to be part of the holiday season, we don't deserve to get a bonus like everyone else does... we don't even deserve to get HALF OF what someone working full-time on minimum wage gets, we don't deserve whatever whatever but still. Just as a harm-reduction measure. Just to keep people from dying homeless on the streets in January. The coldest month of the year. It's cruel to have this early payment situation when the payment is EXACTLY THE SAME. It's just cruel. I'm so glad I made it to the end of January without doing something awful and desperate.

  21. 1. Raises are for employees who through hard work receive a raise in their wages , not for receipts of Social Assistance Benefits .

    2. No wonder you come up short every month when you are cashing your "cheque" two days early every month.

    3. You should be ashamed of yourself abusing the food bank . Accessing Charity while paying for non-essential services like "Cable and Internet services" .That's a poor choice to make. Free internet service at the Library and "free to air" antennas for a one time payment of $75.00.

    4. Just a reminder that a person working for minimum wage receives about $1100.00 a month to live on AFTER TAXES and have extra costs that are not "FREE" i.e. bus fare. Also ODSP is a NON TAXABLE benefit .

    5. Try being a little less entitled. A Cuban I know lives with seven others in a dirt floor shack with no flushing toilet , electricity that goes off for days at a time and an asbestos roof. He's a teacher , works full time and he is paid the equivalent of $22.00 US a MONTH. A new pair of running shoes costs three months wages.

Stop your wining and do something to improve your life instead of expecting the working person to pay your way though your life.

Try taking advantage of the monthly $200.00 employment exemption Benefit and then you wont NEED to go to the food bank.

    FROM THE ODSP WEBSITE:

How will my work affect my ODSP income support?

You can earn up to $200 a month without having your income support reduced. If you earn more than $200 a month, only 50 per cent of your net earnings (or business profits, if you are self-employed) over $200 are deducted from your income support payment. If you’re attending a secondary or post-secondary school full-time, we won’t deduct any your earnings from your ODSP income support.

    2. Before you open your mouth and speak your ignorant uniform biased opinions you should learn some facts. My husband has worked hard labouring construction jobs all his life until a few years ago when he broke his back on the job. To top it off his asshole boss lied and said he didn't do it at work so he wouldn't have to pay insurance and workmans comp. He also had his other employees lie for him. So t was his word against my husband and he couldn't get workmans comp. Now he shattered one of hus discs sending fragments into his siatic nerve causing permanent damage and resulting in constant pain for the rest of his life. He was told he might not ever walk again. Needless to say he his unable to work and will not get better only worse. So you tell me how he is taking advantage of the system and doesn't deserve the money he receives every month. He is expected to support his wife and 3 kids (2 of which are special needs ) on this ODSP. Explain exactly how he should just get a job. Not everyone is a lazy ass just looking to get a free handout. Trust me if he could work he would. He would do anything to work to support his family. 5. I was an RN working in a critical care unit and was assaulted by a violent patient and sustained nerve damage to my spine and left shoulder. I did physio, acupuncture, pain/function programs, you name it. It's been 3 years, I can't work. I've tried SEVERAL times to go back (to my old job & new jobs). I LOVED my job. I still (literally) dream that I'm at work. I have excruciating chronic pain and headaches but can't take anything stronger than Advil because of allergies to opioids. I even tried a year of grad school but I can't tolerate any neck flexion or extension for more than 5 minutes without severe muscle spasms (you can literally see the muscles bulging out of my shoulders and the back of my neck, I'm not making this up). Even WSIB"s own doctors said I can't work. BUT (there is always a but, isn't there??), WSIB asked me to LIE and apply for nursing jobs, saying to potential employers that I can do certain tasks (like CPR, for example) that I absolutely cannot physically do based on my physical restrictions as per their own doctors. When I told them it would put me and patients in danger and poses a enormous ethical issue they told me I was being "non-compliant" and cut off my income support that day. So instead of my nursing income (which at that point I was making over $70K a year), they decided I should only be receiving $147 every 2 weeks, that was all I was worth to them since I wasn't willing to lie to potential employers. I could have appealed and fought it but what WSIB is so crafty at (and trust me, others will absolutely back me up here!), is breaking you down emotionally over and over and over -- they constantly harass the hell out of you and make it seem like the injury was YOUR fault. They would call me on a regular basis and YELL at me on the phone. They would randomly cut off my income and then dodge phone calls for 2 whole months until I got them on their manager on the phone and then it was like, "Oops, my bad!" and I'd finally get 2 months backpay all at once. They screw with your head. So when they finally wear you down you don't appeal because you just don't have any fight left in you -- that is what they are counting on.
But this is why I'm on ODSP. Because I can't work at the moment. I can't return to grad school. I can't even afford physio or treatment. Nothing. As for the drinking/drugs/smoking/etc. I do none of that, I never have. Don't pass judgements please. It makes you look foolish & ignorant. Not all of us are "unwashed masses" as you would imagine. I have 2 undergraduate degrees, a post-grad diploma in critical care nursing, and half a master's degree (all hon.). I have written 2-1/2 novels. I am not sitting here in front of the tv getting wasted every night waiting for cheque-cashing day. I carefully manage my money so I don't run out, my bills are paid, I don't use food banks. I might be on ODSP *right now* but I likely won't be forever. And if I was, so what? The system is there for a reason. People need it FOR A REASON. Stop judging! It's not up to you to judge. Be grateful that you don't need it because trust me, it's not a life you want. If I could go back to my old life when I was working and making $75K, I would do it in a heartbeat, no questions asked.

And I'd love to find a $200/month job or anything that I could keep. In the meantime, I'm grateful that you do pay taxes and don't dictate policy, because ODSP allows me to survive while I gradually improve my employability and my health, so that hopefully I can go back to being a taxpayer, maybe even a job creator, instead of a recipient. I don't know anybody who's on benefits who isn't ashamed of being on benefits and who isn't trying to get back into the workforce. I'm grateful for this cash, because it means I don't have to choose between crime and starvation. My main reason for wanting more money per month is that it would allow me to get back into the workforce faster.

    1. Yeah, it basically costs you whatever you borrowed, in order to pay it back, because you can only afford to downgrade your loan amount by like fifty bucks a month. So every time I need an extra $300, I have an extra week without a food budget, every month for the next three or four months, or five, and each of those months, I spend like $60, then $50, then $40, then $30... in order to step it down instead of paying the whole thing off. Because paying the whole thing off cuts my total monthly budget by 70%. So it'd work for us, if the cost was the same but the repayment period was triple what it is. We don't have any bank accounts that acknowledge our needs, either.

And we have to mobilize and go to protests. We have to take this shitty letter with 1% increase in big bold letters and bring it to politicians and be like "what the fuck is this????" ...we should be showing up at the provincial legislature every month on payday, asking for the rest of our money. That's how the unemployed go on strike. We participate by staying out of the way, by helping society ignore the facts.

So when my friends are like "oh come on, you don't have it so bad" I'm like "no, and the people who have it worse, get the same ridiculous benefits package that I do!" ...yeah, food: $200. What are we supposed to do with that? Fifty bucks a week to feed an adult in chronic pain. That's cat food money. That, my friends, is cat food money. Not people food money.

  31. Part 2

There are hundreds of extra dollars available to ODSP precipitants, all they need to do is take the time to do the research. One thing to remember is that there is actually a fundamental difference between ODSP and OW. ODSP is administered by the Provincial government, and while OW is funded by the province, it is actually administered at the municipal level. Due to the way Ontario funds Social Services, this simple little distinction makes a big difference in how some things are covered. The province has lumped together a number of items that use to be specified individually and they just provide the municipalities a lump some to cover everything, and leave it up to the municipality on how it wants to divide things up. Since my municipality has a higher than average ODSP population (due in part to the higher than average population of seniors) they have chosen to cover, at least in part, items that other municipalities won't cover at all for ODSP recipients. Again, you need to do research and ask questions.

There's also something that needs some clarification, one of the very first comments makes a statement regarding a couple on ODSP. If the ODSP recipient has a spouse who does not qualify for ODSP themselves, and the couple have no dependants, then the basic amount goes up to $917/month, plus drug and dental coverage for both, and the maximum available for shelter goes up to $753/month. It may not seem like much of an increase, but the catch to remember here is that since the spouse doesn't qualify for ODSP they are REQUIRED to work and if they don't ODSP will cut them off. If the spouse also qualifies for ODSP then the basic amount goes up to $1259/month plus shelter up to $753. Dependants can also raise the basic amount depending on the situation. And shelter is actually based on how many people are in the family, a couple with 3 children can get up to $956/month.

If you are on ODSP than do your research, ask questions, or even search out an advocate. There is a lot more available to you than most realize, it may be from ODSP, OW or even another program or organization, you just need to find out about it, and you can only do that by looking for it and asking questions.

    1. Hundreds of extra dollars. What dollars? I don't mean to sound incredulous, but I kind of am. I've gone through their policy directives. No extra dollars there. Okay, $32 for special diet. That's tens of dollars, that's something. I ask my worker if there are any additional programs that I can apply for. He says no. I ask about each individual extra unique expense that I have in my life, that I think might qualify me for something. It doesn't. I'm at $1100. I'll be at $1132 when my special diet thing finally happens. When the correspondence between my doctor and my worker actually goes through. Not sure whether it'll be on my second try or my third. I'd be surprised if it got fucked up three times. But I wouldn't be surprised if it took me another six months to try it again. I mean, I'm on disability for a reason. It includes this entire paperwork process, the meetings, the whole thing. The things I need to do are the things the gov't has agreed I can't do. Not like they'd just transfer my special diet over when it came over. But now I've wandered into TL:DR land because of this one dollar a day extra. Not because of several hundred dollars.

So... what questions do I need to be asking? Where do I need to be looking?

      Delete
    2. There were examples in part 1 of my post, but for some reason it keeps disappearing.

      - Special Diet: Up to an additional $250/month if you require a special diet due to your health, such as a low salt diet, low sugar diet, etc.
      - Transportation for medical appointments: Needs to exceed $15/month, if so they pay $0.18/km for private vehicle or agency driver, take a taxi and they will pay the door to door fare both ways, public transit is which ever is cheaper of paying the individual fares or monthly pass
      - Diabetic supplies: they will help with costs above what is already covered under the drug plan.
      - Service/Guide Dog: If you have a certified service dog, an additional $78/month for food and care
      - $50 to replace your light bulbs with energy efficient CFL's or LED's (only available once)

      Delete
    3. Okay that one-time fifty dollar thing is gonna be great for replacing the rest of my CFLs with LEDs. I mean, replacing my crazy old tungsten lights with LEDs. And apart from that, yeah, I get the $32 special diet. Whatever this $250 special diet they're talking about, that's the $250 special diet I got on when I first got on welfare back in the day, when they were doing the old special diet program, which actually aimed at giving people a reasonable amount of food money. Now, I'm not sure what you'd have to be in order to qualify for $250, but needing an all-organic diet that doesn't contain dairy, which makes almost every soup kitchen and food bank a non-option for me, gets me an extra $32 these days. Or rather, it will, when I finally get it.

      Delete
    4. As for the transportation for medical expenses, my stuff doesn't count because it's too random. So I'm glad it covers people who have regular appointments for a chronic ailment that they're suffering from, but of course, when my buddy needed to go to the hospital every second day to have his bandages re-dressed, that didn't count. He needed the cab money right away, he didn't have any lead time to apply for the benefit, and it was over by the time the application process would have finished up. So his food money went to cabs.

    6. As an advocate that deals with ODSP on a very regular basis there are two things I find that are the biggest reasons why people have problems with ODSP:
      1) Attitude. So many people go into the ODSP office with a bad attitude, ready to argue and fight. That's not necessary, the case workers are not there to destroy your life or make your life impossible, they are there to help. Treat them with respect, and you will get it back. Granted just like anywhere else in society there can be a few bad apples that make the simplest of things difficult, but that's why ODSP has the Internal Review process.
      2) Not being forthright. Often people try to hide certain things because they think "ODSP doesn't need to know that." Yet if ODSP did know then they might be able able to help with the cost of dealing with it. If it's medically relevant, no matter how embarrassing it may seem, then there is no reason to hide it from them.

Special Diet - I don't know your medical situation and this isn't the place for it, however you said you need an "all-organic" diet. Since the directive doesn't specifically include "all-organic" then you need to sit down with your doctor and be very open and honest about your finances on ODSP. You then need to sit down with your ODSP case worker and be very open and honest about your medical condition and the reason for the "all-organic" requirement. With this type of communication something maybe found that can help you with paying for the over priced "organic" food.

Transportation - Again this goes to doing your research and asking questions. You do not need to apply for transportation in advance and there is no need for an application process. In the case of your "buddy" all he would have had to do was get an MSN form from his case worker and get a Dr or RN at the hospital to fill it out and sign it, and then submit it to the office. At then end of the month he would then submit the taxis receipts to get reimbursed for the cost. As long as the office has an MSN form on file (which you will be asked to have redone from time to time) from the Doctor or Clinic that you are going to all you need to do is submit receipts.

    7. Responding to 1:

Good point about being civilized with gov't staff, not only in order to make it easy for them to be nice to you, but in order to make it easy for them to think! It's really hard to think clearly when you're in a high-pressure, high-stakes confrontation. As welfare and ODSP recipients, we know that feeling! Anybody who's had a hostile caseworker knows that feeling. You're going in, you know you're on the level, you know they're not going to be... it's bad. And yeah, the same is true in reverse. I've always been able to cut through this by being really clear about my frustration with the system, so that I'm not taking it out on them, and so that we can work together on the problem. I really became a lot more co-operative and understanding about things when I realized how big his caseload is.

Responding to 2: I gotta ask my friend how the whole thing played out. Ultimately I think he was aware of that whole process, and everything about it worked except nobody wanted the receipts. He was told to get them, he was told they'd reimburse him for them, and then nobody wanted them when he had them. Which has been my experience with receipts... everybody wants to see them until you have them. But I'm going to follow up with him to catch the specifics of that. He was in a painkiller-and-malnutrition-addled state at the time, so everything's a blur to him now and everything was at the time as well, but I remember what he was saying to me at the time about the cabs and stuff.

      Delete
    8. Your instructions about my all-organic diet, I've already gone through that entire process. My ODSP caseworker knows about it, my doctor knows about it... one thing that I probably should do is bring my lawyers in on it, because they seem to be the only ones who can tie in what my doctors are saying with what ODSP can do about it. They're the only ones that can put things in a form that ODSP can get into bed with, so to speak. So I think that may be the next step. Because until it's lined up properly, ODSP can just claim that my basic needs money covers whatever specific thing I'm asking for help with, and it does. It covers food. If I have absolutely no other expenses. It covers my expenses, if I don't buy food. It covers major purchases, if I don't have any expenses and don't buy food. So I think the legal angle is the only one that will demonstrate that me needing an all-organic diet means I need the grocery budget that nobody receives in their "basic needs" money. I just don't know anybody who's on disability or who has a disability who doesn't have some problem like this that costs them about $400 - $600 per month, and we're all living $900 - $1200 below the poverty line, I know I keep bringing it back to this point, but if I were on the poverty line instead of halfway between it and absolute zero, I wouldn't need any of these caseworkers or programs, at all. So I want to know how much I am costing each of these programs so I can total it up and prove to the gov't that they'd save money by just bringing me and everyone else up to the poverty line.

It's also worth restating that the directives USED TO include an all-organic diet, and my original welfare payments included a $250 special diet fund. This program has been eliminated, which amounts to a sneaky 25% cut, which, coupled with the across-the-board 22% Harris cuts, amounts to, like, our "wage" getting halved over the course of a decade. Since that "wage" already put us below the poverty line, I want to hear all about how that's not class warfare. It was done based on the spectre of benefits fraud, totally irrespective of legitimate ODSP and welfare cases.

    1. Nope, but the direct deposit is coming in on the 22nd, so cheques should be, what, the 21st to the 23rd? Anybody got better intel on this?

  34. If you call the ODSP phone number before you get to choose what you do they have a recording telling you which date cheques are issued. And as for couples receiving $300 less its because in a relationship the male is supposed to provide for the woman and support her. Its not always the same either, its based on how much your spouse makes. These was ODSP's exact words when I tried to apply with my child's father after she was born.

    1. Wait... so your child's father wasn't working, you were trying to apply, and you were told no and had a gender roles diatribe delivered to you, verbally? That is... insane. We really should all be recording all our interactions with them and posting them... I wish I'd recorded my HSF application phone call. That was so goddamn traumatic. She can see right on my thing, I'm on it for PTSD, anxiety, depression etc. And she wants to guilt trip me for buying groceries with my utilities money.

    1. I'd be surprised if they sent out cheques for yesterday, they want to pay them at the same time as direct deposit comes in, so it'll probably be monday or tuesday. The weird thing is I don't think I've gotten my bill in the mail saying what I'm going to receive and when.

    2. My odsp cheque always comes in the mail 2 buisness days before direct deposit. Unless its late then its one day before direct deposit. I should get mine monday dec 21 st the very latest

    3. Sounds about right, insh'allah you do get it on-time... I'm hoping that mine doesn't have several hundred dollars missing from it, and this is one of those payments that might be like that, or might just not arrive. The holiday one is hard because they don't send out the receipt beforehand so there's no confirmation of the amount and the date. I guess in december we get the receipt after the payment. It's backward.

  39. I know how people look at people who on welfare and say they are lazy but the fact of a matter is that I didn't know I would be on it because of work related injury and now am on it and I only receive 488$ per month with one child under 16 but it's nothing what they give you.... But the think is lots of you judging others who on Osap or welfare people goes on it because of reasons I went on it because Wsib turn me down because they say I didn't get hurt at work.... I use to make at 30 to 35$ thousand a new year now am only getting 488$ that's down right poverty line. It's hard to live. So people stop judge others and help them with your voice... We are in put pain on hurt to be fighting Wsib on these workplace for help.

    1. What we have to do is make it impossible for this... see there's this situation that happens in the shadows. Where your experience and my experience just happens. And you don't have videos of those meetings, where they tell you what they tell you and you're like "are they actually saying this to me right now?" and I don't have videos of it, or recordings or anything, but generally I don't think the public believes any of this. And until they actually see the situation, we're not going to see change. You are not living downright poverty line. You are living at one quarter of the poverty line. You are living $1500 per month under the poverty line. Remember that. Quote that to anyone who wants to criticize your spending decisions, your needs, anything like that. You are three-quarters of the way between the poverty line and absolute nothing.

    1. Damn, that is so weird... is it an OW or an ODSP payment, or something else? What kind of payment is it? Please follow up and let us know whether you do receive that payment on the 31st... also, that's brutal if you're basically getting paid a week late. That's brutal.

  44. For those who take a money mart loan etc. .... Isn't this considered a loan which in turn is considered income? I agree with the the other person above not to do this because it does get you into a financial jam. A never ending cycle of owing money which eventually will leave you broke.
